Vocabulary was chosen from the most frequent Chinese words in A frequency dictionary of Mandarin Chinese: Core vocabulary for learners (McEnery, Xiao, Rayson, 2015). This is done to ensure (a) that readers are engaged in reading the most used Chinese words from a range of contexts, and (b) novice and intermediate level readers can read the texts. Each story is presented twice; once as a main text to the right in one of two hard-to-read Chinese handwritten scripts, and the same text to the left in a standard printed song font for reference.
